Menu OCR import
The fastest way to put your menu online. Take a photo of your existing printed menu (or upload a PDF), and KhaoNow extracts every category, item, description, and price into a structured digital menu ready to publish.
How it works
Upload an image or PDF (up to ~5 MB). The platform:
- Runs OCR to extract raw text + positional information.
- Sends the OCR output to an LLM with a structured-output prompt that recognizes the menu layout (categories, items, descriptions, prices, modifier groups like “size” or “spice level”).
- Returns a draft menu you can review and edit before publishing.
Why we built it
For most Pakistani restaurants, the biggest blocker to going digital isn’t software — it’s typing the menu in. A 60-item menu takes 2–3 hours of manual data entry. Menu OCR cuts that to under 5 minutes of review.
Cost
Each menu OCR import costs ~PKR 8–15 depending on menu length (Gemini Flash + small OCR pass). Capped at 20 imports/day by default — more than any sane onboarding flow needs.
Limitations (honest)
- Handwritten menus work but accuracy drops to ~85% (vs ~98% for printed text).
- Multi-language menus (Urdu + English on the same page) parse fine, but you may need to assign which language is the “primary” item name.
- Modifier-group detection is best-effort — clear groupings work (“Size: Small / Medium / Large”), free-form descriptions don’t.
